Jasmine Oil vs Jasmine Absolute

The terms jasmine oil or jasmine essential oil and jasmine absolute are often used interchangeably, but differ slightly. True essential oils are created by distillation to separate the volatile oils from the flowers (or other plant parts) from plants, but this process isn’t always possible. In the case of jasmine, the flowers are too delicate to endure the distillation process. The fragrance and essences from the jasmine flower are extracted via a solvent instead. For all practical purposes, the absolute is nearly identical to an essential oil. Absolutes are highly concentrated fragrance that smell the same as the original flower.

Are there Scientific Studies to Support the Health Benefits of Jasmine Absolute?

Because herbal remedies are not regulated in the United States, few studies have been conducted on the effectiveness of jasmine to treat health conditions. A 2010 study found that using jasmine for aromatherapy may relieve depression and uplift mood. It also revealed that jasmine improves the oxygen level in the blood. Another study from Ait. “G. Duke of Tuscany” in Thailand determined that jasmine contains flavonoids and coumarins that promote vascular health, cardiac glycosides that help with heart function, and phenolics that may help the body to detoxify.  More research is needed to determine jasmine’s effectiveness in promoting a healthy heart.

Jasmine has been used for thousands of years to soothe and pamper the skin. It is thought to increase the elasticity of the skin, prevent scarring and heal skin irritations. It is also thought to relieve stress and calm bronchial spasms. Jasmine may also be used in tea to promote relaxation and reduce stress.

How Do Skin and Body Products with Jasmine Work?

Many are confused when they hear the term aromatherapy and mistakenly think that it only applies to inhaling fragrances. Aromatherapy also includes applying highly scented lotions or skin products or soaking in a bath with fragrant herbs, such as jasmine. While the properties of jasmine absolute work to pamper the skin, the fragrance works to promote relaxation,  reduce stress, relieve depression and uplift moods.

The Legend of Jasmine Wedding Flowers

Jasmine is a popular flower for bridal bouquets as its delicate white blooms symbolize purity and innocence, while its fragrance is sweet and sensual. But that’s not the only reason the jasmine flower is so popular for weddings. According to legend, it all began in 1699 when the Duke of Tuscany was given the first jasmine plant in Europe. Being a greedy man, the Duke did not wish to share his beautiful flowers and issued a decree that no one was allowed to take a cutting. However, his poor gardener could not resist the urge to give his beautiful sweetheart a sprig of jasmine for her birthday, as he had no money for a gift. She so loved the jasmine flower that she planted the cutting where it rooted and thrived, producing a large bush. The young woman took cuttings from the jasmine bush and sold them to wealthy ladies. She saved the earnings from the cuttings so that she and the gardener were able to get married. To this day, the jasmine is a favored wedding flower carried in her memory.
